Tom Steyer put his money where his mouth is, donating $91 million to Democratic and liberal causes in the last political cycle. In part 2 of GV Wire’s exclusive interview, he talks about two big problems facing Californians: water and housing.

California values are the basis for Steyer’s viewpoints. To him, those values revolve around justice, openness and optimism. “This is a state where everybody is welcome, where everybody is included, where everybody can live out their personal dream,” Steyer said.

As to the home ownership problem, Steyer says it is about inequality. “We have a dramatic shortage of housing, and as a result of that, we have housing that is extremely expensive,” he said. Steyer talked about local measures for low-income housing he’s worked on to help build up the supply.

With housing, there has to be water. Steyer feels that usage of groundwater is important. “This drought has forced us to think imaginatively and innovatively of how we collect the water, store the water and how we use the water.”

GV Wire asked Steyer about Sites Dam and Temperance Flat Dam, but he was not familiar with those projects. Steyer said collection and use are the best options.
